On behalf of the entire team at Lingoo Ninja, Lingoo School, Lingoo Camps & Lingoo Academy we'd like to wish all our students, their families and friends a very Happy New Year.

January 2017 is set to be extremely busy. With school meets in Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine, Netherlands & Belgium.  We're also planning our 'Host Family Meets' at various locations around Ireland & UK to bring host families up to speed on their opportunities and obligations as part of our co-operative network.

2016 will be looked upon fondly, but 2017 is full of opportunity and optimism, we hope you'll share in our success and enthusiasm.

Warm seasonal regards,

Lingoo Ninja Camps 2017

As our business evolves, we listen carefully to the needs and preferences of our students and host family network. To this end, we're pleased to announce the launch of Lingoo Camps from 1st January 2017.

Our Camps will feed into our host family network, with cluster development around specialist activities - Equine, English, Sports, Culture etc. Camps will offer great value for money, while ensuring many of the benefits of an Immersion Homestay.

While an extension of the Lingoo Ninja marketing brand, the board of Directors and Management Team will differ, ensuring maximum experience and expertise to deliver quality Camp packages.

Bookings can be individual for Camps, or we welcome groups 10-36 students ideally. Simply email:

International Day for People with Disabilities

December 3rd is International Day for People with Disabilities.

When we established our group of companies - Lingoo Ninja, Lingoo School, Lingoo Academy and Lingoo Camps, it was agreed we'd make our company and products accessible to all - regardless of gender, nationality, religion, LGBT and ability / disability.

Our policy of inclusion is one of understanding, that not all products fit one size. Every student is different. Every host family is different.  But we're very proud to reiterate that we welcome students (and have already hosted students with mobility issues, wheelchair users, and students with Autism) from all backgrounds, abilities and needs.

Each application will be viewed compassionately and practically. Our companies will do their very best to provide the highest standard in service for students with different needs.

It's not about disability.  It's recognition of your different ability.

A Christmas Crisis

This evening just after 8pm I answered a 'Private' number on my phone. A faint, husky female voice asked for me by name  and while my immediate hope was "oh I've pulled a date for next weekend" it was soon dashed as the person introduced themselves as a 'representative' of '******'.   She is a 'representative' from a company specializing in placing students with families for the academic year to study at school.

It would appear that this company (in this region) has 5 students living with host families who had been under the impression they'd be spending Christmas with the families instead of relocating back to Spain, Italy, Slovakia & Germany over the school holidays.   A natural assumption I guess considering you pay these organizations for 40 weeks which is essentially September to beginning of June.

Unbeknownst to the students, or agency in fairness, the host families in two cases are travelling abroad for Christmas.  One has family stay with them, rendering the house full to capacity and in need of what is usually the 'spare room' which the exchange student is using. The remaining two families feel it's an unnecessary intrusion a stranger being there for Christmas (even though they're happily taking the stipend).

So now the 'representative' needs to find alternative accommodation for 5 students   (3 male, 2 female) from 21st December until 4th January approximately - somewhere they can spend Christmas, eat, sleep, wash, etc and they offered €85 per student per week for the honor!

Even if I wasn't busy this Christmas I wouldn't get involved. But it demonstrates again how some companies fail to consider even the most obvious consequences of a student spending a year in Ireland which ultimately includes Christmas, Easter, St Patrick's and Halloween holidays.  A very early question we ask host families is "Is there any time of year you cannot host a student?" and we match that answer with a question we ask all students "will you return to your native country at any of the following school holidays?"

At Lingoo Ninja, Lingoo School, Lingoo Academy & Lingoo Camps we work hard to match students with hosts, personalities with locations & activities, academic interest with schools and student expectations with host family capabilities.  This is one of the key selling points of our business, 100% Irish owned, Irish Management & Irish Coordinators in Ireland, UK Management & Coordinators in Britain.

So while I was unable to satisfy the needs if the husky lady calling for assistance this evening, it wasn't simply because she's not affiliated to our company, the students are not in our program and none of the host families are in our network, it is because last time we assisted (May 2016) we ended up hosting the student and never saw the expenses covered.

When deciding on a Homestay or School Year service provider, don't pick a company based on false promises, overselling products and under delivering service.  Pick a company where local management, local families and local coordinators work hand in hand to deliver a first class package for all students.

This year alone, we had to "accept" a young man urgently from another company who messed up an exchange placement in Glenstal School. This summer we'd to "rescue" two students from another company who'd placed them in a who'll unsuitable family, never interviewed or house checked.  And in September we'd to rescue a young disabled kid, put in an unsuitable host family with stairs, then expected to "walk" 800m a day from public bus to school gates up two steep hills and the student was using a walking aid to help with mobility. A shame such companies exist.

Our company does the home checks, family interviews, background checks and school accessibility ♿ checks to make sure we get it right first time, every time!

Weekend Blues

We had our first snow this weekend in Ireland. Well, a few flakes anyway.

Doesn't stop the team however plugging away at the important stuff. This weekend Catriona is off to Tipperary to continue our home inspection schedule, a unique feature to Lingoo Ninja & Lingoo School that ALL our host families are home visited, interviewed and background checked, ensuring 100% peace of mind for  parents sending Students to Ireland or UK.

Our network will have between 250-400 hosts (internal, public Ninja & closed School Year) all thoroughly checked and inspected.  It also means, because of our extensive network if a homestay doesn't work in one host family, we have multiple options to resolve the situation, including emergency placements in event of a host family emergency (illness or death for instance).

Jon this weekend will mix parent time and online marketing. The arrival of Veronika to the team has speeded up our conversations with agents, schools, students and organizations across 41 countries. This week alone, our first sign ups from Georgia and Afghanistan!

The Ninja Bug (the VW Beetle we're branding) looks awesome. Seems our "friendly Ninjas" really stick in the minds if people and this week we had a Hungarian  school contact us remembering when we'd researched them back in Spring. The Ninjas they remembered and they're distributing our brochures to the English Language students :)

Next week inspections in Galway & Dublin.  Just not enough hours in the day!

Competitors get cranky!

It's absolutely remarkable how, despite being called "Industry Leaders" or "World's Best" the so-called competition gets very cranky when you apparently tread on their toes :)

As a free marketeer, I believe people vote with their feet, and wallets.  If there is a product or service a person likes, then ultimately they'll choose that.  By virtue of one company winning over another doesn't mean anything underhand was done, or opponents ridiculed, in fact I think it means we've offered a better product and service, at a better price (or even higher price) which is more suited to the end user.

Imagine our delight at getting a booking for 3 siblings, each for 3 weeks each in Summer 2017.  The father had been searching for a suitable "Homestay" program for a while, and the family while based in Frankfurt had contacted some of the very reputable companies associated with Homestay, and a few local agents / companies.

His persistent research then resulted in one of our LinkedIn re-engagement algorithms displaying the father several of our advertisements, which lead him to click on us, and eventually engage!

It seems the program of English Immersion, structured environment, English lessons, day trips, activities and local coordinators was exactly what he was looking for, and despite being quoted .... wait for it €8,987.24 for what is essentially 9 weeks Homestay in Ireland by one of our competitors, none of our competitors were offering him that service! Yes all offer Homestay, some with or without activities, some with welcome programs some without, some with English (as an added expensive extra) and some without. All in all this father was facing the prospect of paying €8,987.24 for a package he wasn't really all that "sold on" for fear he would miss out on sending his children to Ireland in Summer 2017.

Lingoo Ninja doesn't engage in pressure selling.  We get enough inquiries (particularly at peak time) to sustain us nicely into a steep enough growth trajectory. We also don't rubbish competitors.  Some companies offer superb packages out there, at affordable prices, with varying degrees of support and quality.  Lingoo Ninja & Lingoo School is aiming to deliver something different.

Would it shock you to learn that one company in the "Homestay" industry charges in excess of €420 per week for their School Year Program yet less than €100 goes to the Host Family per week?  And no the rest doesn't go on school fees, transport, uniform, day trips or English lessons, because they are ALL added on as "extras".

We want to take this opportunity to set out our stall clearly:

:: Our School Year Program is €12,775 and INCLUDES:  Host Family contribution of €225 each and every week, School Fees, Transport, Day Trips, Local Coordinators, Uniform, School Books, all taxes and charges.  All the student needs is some spending money and flights. www.highschoolyear.lingooninja.com

:: Our Lingoo Academy & Camps use an internal network of Host Families, and the fee per Host Family is also €225 per week.  The price you see is hiding no nasty surprises.  www.academy.lingooninja.com

:: Our Lingoo Ninja Horse Camp is the same. www.eastercamp.lingooninja.com

::Our Lingoo Ninja WebPortal also enables students to INDEPENDENTLY book with Lingoo Ninja Approved Host Families across Ireland & UK, with local coordinators on hand to help out.  Host Families on www.LingooNinja.com can set their own fees and students / families can negotiate directly the best package for them.

Incidentally, the Frankfurt Father who was going to be charged €8,987.24 for his 3 children next Summer got an enhanced package from Lingoo Ninja for under €6,000 and that was without discounts, just our regular prices.  We put him in touch with three past students, one who had stayed with us three times, one here on their second trip and a new student from 2016 Summer who is rebooked for 2017.

Our students are not only our best advertisement.  And while from time to time you get the very odd "bad apple student" it is abundantly clear our services and range of options are not only competitive, but desirable.

The phone call from our so-called "competitor accusing us of "stealing" the business from them ..... I say to them look after your students, and the business will look after itself!

Catriona and myself are absolutely determined to ensure we maintain high standards and a competitive edge.  Grumpy phone calls from other companies just shows desperation and lack of professionalism.

Not enough hours in the day!

I'm starting this email to blog post at 02.17 in the morning, not because I'm up super early to catch a holiday flight, but because no matter how many enquiries or  issues we get through in a day, more just keep piling in on top.

Good complaints are not really complaints, they're more reasons and excuses for missing that meal, skipping a coffee break or staying up into the small hours to complete profiles or send out quotations.

Lingoo Ninja Team are pulling this blog together as a contemporaneous record of how this new venture develops.  Essentially we're pulling together 4 existing businesses, 20+ years of experience and a management team from 4 countries and support personnel in IT, Marketing, Student Management, Administration, Logistics and Tourism....not to mention English Language teaching :)  Still, despite the expertise and devotion, each of us has core business responsibilities we need to look after day to day.

02.27 now and shutting down for the evening.  Skype call with our Lingoo App designers in Jaipur at 07.00 GMT....  Would it look too bad Skyping with a bed head resting in my Internest?

To paraphrase Mark Twain, in a way "6 hours from now I'll be more disappointed with the sleep I didn't get than the sleep I did. Throw off those bed sheets, leave the heat and comfort behind. Slap a wet facecloth on your head. Wake up, get out, work time".

Team Lingoo Ninja out.
